Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
A prosthetist specializes in designing and fitting artificial limbs (prostheses) for individuals who have experienced limb loss. An orthotist specializes in designing and fitting external braces and supports (orthoses) that help improve function, correct deformity, or relieve pain. At Aero Prosthetics, our clinicians are certified in both fields (CPOs) to provide comprehensive care.
While many insurance plans require a physician referral for prosthetic or orthotic services, we're happy to help guide you through this process. Contact our office, and we can help determine if you need a referral based on your specific insurance plan.
The timeline varies depending on the type of device, complexity, and individual needs. Simple orthotic devices might be ready in 1-2 weeks, while custom prosthetics typically take 4-6 weeks from initial evaluation to final delivery. During your consultation, we'll provide a more specific timeline for your situation.
We have two convenient locations in Southern California: Anaheim Hills and Victorville. We serve patients throughout Orange County, San Bernardino County, and surrounding areas.
Prosthetics
Most prosthetic devices last between 3-5 years, depending on your activity level, changes in body weight, and how well the device is maintained. Children typically need more frequent replacements due to growth. We recommend annual evaluations to ensure your prosthesis continues to fit and function properly.
Daily cleaning of the socket with mild soap and water is recommended. Keep the device away from extreme heat, which can damage components. Regularly inspect for signs of wear and tear. We provide detailed care instructions specific to your device upon delivery and offer maintenance services to extend the life of your prosthesis.
Many patients return to their previous activities, including sports and hobbies. Today's advanced prosthetic technology allows for specialized devices designed for specific activities like running, swimming, or cycling. During your evaluation, we'll discuss your goals and design a solution that helps you achieve them.
Most patients benefit from having at least one primary prosthesis for everyday use. Depending on your lifestyle and activities, you might also need specialized devices for specific activities like swimming or running. Some patients also have a backup device for emergencies.
Orthotics
Wearing schedules vary based on the type of orthosis and your specific condition. Some devices are designed for all-day wear, while others might only be needed during certain activities or at night. Your clinician will provide a detailed wearing schedule as part of your treatment plan.
Most insurance plans cover orthotic devices when deemed medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan and condition. Our insurance specialists will verify your benefits before treatment begins and explain any potential out-of-pocket costs.
Most orthoses can be wiped down with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the device or using harsh chemicals. Removable padding may be hand-washed according to the specific care instructions provided with your device. We'll provide detailed cleaning instructions specific to your orthosis.
We strongly recommend against making adjustments to your orthosis yourself, as improper adjustments can affect the function of the device and potentially cause harm. If your orthosis feels uncomfortable or isn't functioning properly, please contact our office for an adjustment appointment.
Insurance & Billing

Appointments & Care
Please bring your insurance card, photo ID, physician referral (if applicable), any relevant medical records or imaging, and a list of current medications. If you're being fitted for a replacement device, bring your current device. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the affected area.
Initial evaluations typically take 60-90 minutes. Follow-up appointments and fittings usually take 30-60 minutes. Delivery appointments, where you receive your final device, may take 1-2 hours to ensure proper fit and provide usage instructions.
The frequency of follow-up appointments depends on your specific needs and device. Typically, we'll see you for several fittings during the fabrication process, then for delivery of the final device. After that, we recommend check-ups every 3-6 months for the first year, then annually for maintenance and assessment.
If your device needs repairs, contact our office immediately. Minor repairs can often be done while you wait. More extensive repairs may require a loaner device while yours is being fixed. Many repairs are covered by insurance, particularly within the warranty period.
